GTA VI Has More Than 600,000 Animations—and Rockstar Emphasizes Human Craft

Rockstar's reported animation count helps explain the reactive NPCs, wildlife, vehicles, and everyday movement visible across Leonida.

Rockstar says GTA VI contains more than 600,000 animations, according to The New York Times' visit to Rockstar North. The report compares that figure with roughly 55,000 animations in GTA V and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The total covers far more than Jason and Lucia. It supports pedestrians, wildlife, vehicles, environmental reactions, and the small routines that make an open world feel inhabited rather than staged around the player.

Rockstar also emphasized the game's human-made craft in the Times report. Separate reporting says the company created a Los Angeles team focused heavily on pedestrian NPCs, with writers, directors, producers, and specialist research contributing to the population of Leonida.

A raw animation count cannot guarantee better missions or smarter artificial intelligence by itself. Its significance is scale: Rockstar has invested in a much larger library of authored reactions that can be combined throughout the world.
